Dartmouth College President March 26, 2012 Jim Kim, the current Dartmouth College president, was recently nominated by President Obama to be the new president of the World Bank. It came as quite a surprise around the world as Jim Kim doesnt have a background in banking. Rather, his experience is in health care. When he was selected as the Dartmouth College president just a few years ago, folks were critical of the choice because he didnt have experience leading a major research university. So this isnt the first time that Jim Kim was an unconventional, outside-the-box choice for a big job. Bev Taylor, Founder of Ivy Coach, with former Dartmouth College president James Wright and his wife, Susan. Whats interesting is the mixed reaction the nomination of Kim to lead the World Bank has received in the Dartmouth community. Some students, alumni, and faculty are excited that their college president would be nominated for such a prestigious job. Others feel he is letting the college down by leaving after only a couple of years, with an agenda unmet and a legacy unfulfilled. Theyre angry that he may have used Dartmouth as a stepping stone to a greater position of influence. We at Ivy Coach think this is utterly ridiculous! Jim Kim did indeed use the Dartmouth presidency as a stepping stone to a greater position of national and global service! And that is a good thing. A very good thing. Now, when Dartmouth recruits their next president, candidates will view the office as not only a fantastic opportunity to shape an Ivy League institution but also a fantastic opportunity to become a national and world leader! How is that possibly bad? From the very beginning of his tenure (see his inauguration speech), Jim Kim quoted former Dartmouth College president John Sloan Dickey to embrace the worlds troubles as your own. That is precisely what Jim Kim has done throughout his career from fighting HIV-AIDS to shaping the liberal arts education at the finest university in the nation. Its precisely what Jim Kim is doing by accepting this call to global service. Why should Jim Kim spend decades at Dartmouth? Many leaders can accomplish great things in a short amount of time and then its time for them to move on to their next task. Does that mean leaders who stay a long time arent as effective? No. Former Dartmouth president James Wright worked at the College on the Hill for quite a long time and he was a superb leader. His booming voice and ever eloquent words still echo in the muscles and the veins of Dartmouth alumni around the girdled earth. But Jim Kim being criticized for leaving Dartmouth when hes been tapped by the President of the United States for a most important job is laughable. We salute Jim Kim for making Dartmouth proud. May he continue to make the worlds problems his own.

It was a bright sunny summer day in June. My percussion instruction at the local university was year round. I was driving with my mom heading to Wichita State University. The plan next week was finally to get my full driver’s license, so this was one of our last trips together for a while. She tended to enjoy the back neighborhood route, to Wichita State University, which lead us to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. The route we took each week lead us through the beautiful historical neighborhoods in Wichita Kansas. This established residential area has streets lined with beautiful, enormous, well-kept homes for the most part. The guy pulled his crumpled car slowly back up the driveway and parked it. Mom exited the car and started taking pictures of the damage strewn all around. The guy approache d my mom saying aloud â€Å"I don’t have insurance.† My mom instructed me to call 911. The guy suddenly left and went into his house, refusing to give his information to us. This bothered my mom and she suddenly sprang into action. She told me to go back to the driver’s side of the truck and to stay behind it no matter what happened. This was because Kansas is an open carry state. She did a literal 360-degree turn looking for witnesses. She spotted the painter’s van across the street and sprinted towards it. The next events seemed to happen fast and at the same time dragged on. When the guy came out of the house, a female came with him. She had a pleading face and begged us not to call the police. The guy continued to keep his identity unknown despite our repeated requests for his information. The squad car and my dad arrived at almost the same time. The officer got right to work and had us begin the information exchange. The officer directed the handcuff ed guy in his car just as I finished my written statement. By this time, a second police car arrived. I called my drum professor to let him know I would not be at lessons today and why. Without food, people will die. Either they do not have the means to buy food or they live in a place where food and vegetation are scarce and not readily available to the public. In any case, food remains a necessity all living creatures must have. Thanks to modern technology and advancements in all fields of agricultural business (agri-business), the availability of food has increased tremendously. Modern farmers put in the same amount of work and effort for twice the reward. Wendell Berry, a man who grew up during the transition of old farming style and new farming style, noticed the transition from mules to tractors and the efficiency that came with the switch. GROW Essay Oh, cool!!! I had crept into my fathers science laboratory out of curiosity and spotted a potion labelled GROW. Below the label was a small note which said, Effects will take place in approximately 10 hours. I was curious about what my father was up to. He was an eccentric scientist who was trying to develop a formula to synthesize a product which could be sold for a lot of money. For example, he had tried to turn graphite pencils into diamond, water into liquid gold, and had tried to cross a durian with a pumpkin to produce really huge fruit which was big and juicy. Of course, all his experiments never succeeded and we had to live on my mothers salary alone. I wondered what effects this potion labeled GROW would have. I was short for my age and had always wanted to be five centimeters taller. Maybe this was the answer to my predicament. I got a spoon and had a taste of it. Wow! It tasted delicious. I couldnt resist the temptation to drink the whole bottle of potion. When I woke up i n the morning, I felt extremely uncomfortable. My face was puffing up and I had a splitting headache. I could not possibly miss school that day as I had a Science examination. I quickly dressed up and rushed to school. When I was on the bus, I felt like I was growing bigger and bigger. My stomach felt queasy and I felt like it was going to burst. I felt hot and flushed. My fingers were really fat. They looked like bananas. I was growing bigger and bigger. Some pupils whom I did not know were giggling and pointing at me. I was shaken but pretended that I did not know what was happening.When I reached school, I went straight to the classroom.
